The Toy House Temporary Closes

We are sad  to say that, following advice, we have taken the decision to close The Toy House. Hopefully, it won't be too long & this virus will have run it's course. Take care

Exciting Times

The past few months have been very exciting at The Toy House and we would like to share all our news with you.

In December, we were lucky enough to have Santa visit The Toy House- not once but three times!- to spread Christmas spirit. He delivered wonderful pressies for our little ones. The Toy House was filled fun, laughter and lots of delicious mince pies.

We would like to say a special thank you to Santa Claus, Mrs Claus and his cheeky Elf.

How we celebrated The Year Of the Rat

As always, our Stay & Play sessions are themed to celebrate the seasons, different cultures and festivities. We started 2020 celebrating Chinese New Year with our fabulous visitors. We decorated The Toy House, offered Chinese themed resources for our little visitors to explore, ran craft sessions and had a taster session of different Chinese delicacies.

Music & Dance Spectacular

At the Masonic Hall, we recently held a fundraising Spectacular Music & Dance evening. It was an amazing night which was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended. The atmosphere was electric; everybody danced and had such good fun. Once again, we are so grateful for the continual support from the Millennium Masons especially, Peter Harding and Sue Wilkinson.

Finally, we would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who attended the event especially our fabulous friends from The Pavilion project, who provided the wonderful entertainment.

Lights, Camera Action

Recently, the day to day running of The Toy House has been captured by Lydia & Leo Fernandez-Arias . This footage will be used to create a short film that we hope will engage the local community. This will provide the viewers with an insight into our charity and how it benefits our local community.

It is a 5!

We are overjoyed to announce that (once again!) we have been awarded a 5 star National Food Hygiene rating. Many thanks to our dedicated team of volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain this highest standard.

Love is in the air

That is certainly true for two of our wonderful volunteers, Victoria and Bob.

Victoria has been involved with The Toy House for 4 years. She is heavily involved with the charity as she is a member of our trustees board. About 15 months ago, Victoria introduced us to a lovely gentleman, called Bob, who she met through the church. As a result of Victoria’s gentle persuasion, Bob has now become our handyman and part of our garden maintenance team. It was clear from the start, that they made a great team and only had eyes for each other.

The Toy House worked its magic and in September 2019, they realised their friendship had turned into love. Bob proposed to Victoria and she said "yes."

They got married on 25th January 2020 surrounded by family and friends, many of whom were from The Toy House. They couldn't be happier.

The Toy House would like to wish them both all the very best in their future lives together.

Our Autumn News

Thank you’s

Since the changes within Trafford Council, we have become a self-supporting charity. Therefore, we greatly appreciate all the kind people who work tirelessly raising funds for The Toy House. We require these funds to keep our charity going for the good of the residents of Trafford.

Sharon Lewis, who is a long-time friend of the Toy House, contacted us to say that her employer ENGIE would like to help us. They had been aware of the work that we do at The Toy House and wanted to support us. On September 4th, five employees from ENGIE spent three days painting the hall, the stairs, and Lorraine’s room. They provided all the decorating materials and they have donated a toilet and sink for our new bathroom facilities. This fantastic company engages with local charities, organisations, and schools to make a positive difference in society. We would like to say a huge thank you for their generosity and kindness- we are so very grateful!

We would like to congratulate our very own Road Runner, Liz Osler. Liz is a board member and has been involved with the Toy House for many years. Liz signed up for the Warrington Half Marathon and spent months training for it.  Unfortunately, the event was cancelled but this didn’t deter our Liz! No, she organised her very own solo half-marathon event and managed to finish it in 2 hours and 17 minutes and in the process raised £3121!! A lady from Solemother virtual running group saw Liz’s amazing achievement and presented her with a medal. A big thank you and a gigantic well done to Liz. We all are so proud!

One of our visitors recently attended The Toy House for his granddaughters 3rd birthday party. He was so impressed with how the local community benefited from our charity, that he nominated us to his company. As a result, we were kindly awarded £500 from Hawkins & Associates. We would like to say a huge thank you for the thoughtful nomination and the generous donation.

The Urmston Millenniums Masons have been life-long supporters of The Toy House. They hold regular fundraising events throughout the year to support us. Jan Horan was invited to Urmston Masonic Lodge to talk about The Toy House and to her surprise, she was presented with a £200 cheque! It was such a lovely surprise and we would like to thank you for your continued support.

Finally, our special thank you goes to Dennis McGolin who came to our rescue recently and repaired our leaking roof. It was a true act of kindness thank you.

News

We are pleased to announce that George Devlin has been appointed as our new Chairman. George has been involved with the local community for many years and we believe that he will be a vital asset as we continue our journey. We look forward to working alongside George.

Well, this Autumn half term has certainly been action-packed! Our timetable is filled with various groups for the whole community to enjoy and benefit from. One of our particular busy sessions is for families with twins. Due to the high demand, often an extra pair of hands is required, and we are more than happy to help out! We provide a wide range of suitable and often duplicated resources. These sessions create opportunities for new friendships to be formed in a relaxed atmosphere. This helps to lessen the feeling of isolation that can often be experienced as a parent/carer.

In September, we welcomed back pupils from the Acre Hall Specialist Unit and The Orchards School. We like to call them our VIP visitors. These sessions are specifically modified to meet the individual needs of the children. This means that we choose appropriate resources suited to the child and run sensory room sessions. At the end of the session, some of the children enjoy joining in with a sing-song

We are pleased to report that our personalised children’s parties are proving to be very successful. Also, we have had an increased interest in people hiring our larger items for family events.

Can Do project

Leonard Cheshire, the charity behind the Can Do program, works with partners to open doors to opportunity.   This project has brought together The Toy House, a community hub for Trafford families, and Trafford Choices, which works with SEN adults within the local area.  It has provided these young people with opportunities to learn new skills, make friends and to make a difference to their local community.

For six weeks, the group has been visiting Wellacre’s on-site Eco Centre to carry out a number of activities including composting, planting herbs on the Eco wall, potting cacti and spring bulbs, weeding the flower beds to prepare them for next year, and clearing the path around the pond.

Two of our fabulous Toy House volunteers, Bob Perry and Victoria MacLeod-Griffiths, have led the activities with their gardening expertise and they have been on hand to teach the young group new skills.

Margaret Bamber, from the Toy House said:

“The intergenerational connection has been fabulous to observe between the volunteers and the young people.  Connor, one of the young gardeners, has been shaking Bob's hand each week and saying, “Thank you for showing me how to do that.””

When this six-week project is completed, The Toy House hopes to carry on the community project. We would love to bring our young volunteers and families to the Eco Centre.

Half term holiday sessions

During the October half term, we ran two spookily holiday sessions which were very well attended. Our sessions are always inclusive and we always aim to meet the needs and entertain the various ages of our visitors. We ran a number of Halloween crafts which proved very popular. On one of the days, we welcomed Kirsty from Love Forever photography to The Toy House to run baby and family photo shoots. We had lots of very excited children dressed up and ready to smile.

On October 25th, The Toy House held a fundraising Band & Croon night at the Parish Centre Davyhulme. Despite the miserable Manchester weather, we had a fantastic evening. We want to say ‘thank you’ to everyone who attended and supported our charity. We are pleased to say that the Trafford Mayor and Mrs Sue Taylor popped in during the evening.

Finally, a special thank you to the Sweet Rhythm Band, Ruthie O'Brien, Neeve Zahra, and Little Mo Peters who performed on the evening. We would also like to thank  Lydia Fernandouz-Arias, our very own photographer, who captured all the magical memories that were made that evening. All of these wonderful individuals gave their time to us for free and made the night a great success.

Welcome

The Toy House is a warm and welcoming community hub filled with lots of friendly people for you to meet and chat to.

Here is a snapshot of some of the things that we get up to at The Toy House:

At The Toy House, we host stay and play sessions for parents/carers, childminders, and children to meet others and play with our wide range of resources. Often compared to Aladdin’s magical cave, The Toy House is bursting with specialist resources for your little ones to play with.

Our divine cream teas and delicious afternoon teas for adults have become an increasingly popular choice with our customers. Why don’t you phone up and arrange a catch up with your friends over our scrumptious, homemade sweet and savoury treats?

We host children’s parties which guarantee fun for all involved! We love to personalise our parties to cater for your child’s interests. Within the cost of the party, we decorate The Toy House to meet the theme of your party, provide a wonderful spread to meet the dietary requirements of your guests, and host fun-filled activities.

Everyone can enjoy our fantastic sensory room including our little visitors and people with onset dementia.
